Calechosa is about a fifteen-minute drive from the beach towns of Melaque and Cuastecomate, with several banks, medical services and many hotels and restaurants. Barra de Navidad, 20 minutes away, has fishing charters and a championship golf course. La Manzanilla, another popular beach town, is 25 minutes. For surfers there is a point break in front of Calechosa.
First class buses go from Melaque to Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta (4 ½ hours). Manzanillo Airport (ZLO) is forty minutes by car. It has direct flights to Mexico City, Calgary, Los Angeles, Houston, Phoenix and Dallas. Cars can be rented at the airport.
Concern about security in Mexico is understandable, but incidents involving the millions of foreign tourists who come annually are rare. Towns like Melaque are peaceful and orderly, with no visible homelessness. Calechosa is a few minutes away from local police, the National Guard (a federal police force), a Highway Patrol station and an army base. Being on a dead-end road limits casual visitors, and neighbors are vigilant.
